– Get Excited about the Gospel!

The biggest secret to being successful at anything in life is in first finding something you really love to do and then doing it better than anyone else. We naturally perform better when we are doing something we enjoy. This is the great key to being motivated, innovative and accomplishing things in life. Living the Gospel of jesus Christ to it fullest will bring joy into your life like nothing else can in life.

But since I have embraced the Gospel not for one half-minute, to the best of my recollection, has anything worn to me a gloomy aspect, under all circumstances I have felt pleasant and cheerful. When surrounded by mobs, with death and destruction threatening on every hand, I am not aware but that I felt just as joyful, just as well in my spirit, as I do now. Prospects might appear dull and very dark, but I have never seen a time in this Gospel but what I knew that the result would be beneficial to the cause of truth and the lovers of righteousness, and I have always felt to joyfully acknowledge the hand of the Lord in all things. – Brigham Young (Journal of Discourses, 26 vols. [London: Latter-day Saints’ Book Depot, 1854-1886], 3: 321.)

Fear, reward or compulsion would be some possible motivations in life. These however might not be the best. Enjoyment would be the ideal motivation to get you and those around you to always perform their best. Decide to have a cheerful personality and be happy no matter the situation.

…give me a religion that will make me happy here, and that will make me happy hereafter. If you have the blues, or the greens, shake them off, and learn to be happy, and to be thankful…the man who is happy himself can make others feel so, for the light of God is in him, and others feel the influence, and feel happy in his society. I want the Saints to live in a way that they can feel happy all the time… – Jedediah M. Grant (Journal of Discourses, 26 vols. [London: Latter-day Saints’ Book Depot, 1854-1886], 3: 11 – 12.)

Excitement is contagious. If people see you being excited about the gospel they will in turn want to gain the same enthusiasm. If you are motivated and showing innovation in what you do, then others around you will also seek to improve. Let people see how happy you are and let them know why.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and be ready always to give an answer with meekness and fear to every man that asketh of you a reason for the hope that is in you (1 Pet  3:15)

I suppose the worst salesman is the one that does not get excited about their product, one that does not look like they are enjoying themselves. Enthusiasm is an essential quality of anyone that is in sales. This quality alone can make or break a person’s ability to draw others into what they have to offer. A man once spoke up in Sunday school class and stated that he used to be in sales and his manager use to tell him that before calling a prospect, he should think as if the customer had a terminal illness and that he had the anecdote to cure him. The world has a terminal illness and is facing physical and spiritual death. We actually have the cure of the gospel and should be excited to share that. We have cause to be genuinely enthusiastic about what we have to offer.

I need not remind you that this cause in which we are engaged is not an ordinary cause. It is the cause of Christ. It is the kingdom of God our Eternal Father. It is the building of Zion on the earth, the fulfillment of prophecy given of old and of a vision revealed in this dispensation. (Gordon B. Hinckley)

  1. Thanks for the encouraging words. We need reminding for some reason about what a blessing the gospel is in our lives and how it can save the world.
